3-card spread
The Three-Card Spread
Past · Present · Future
The classic three-card spread is the starting point for almost every tarot journey. Three cards together form a short arc that shows where you've come from, where you stand now, and which direction is opening up. Simple enough to draw daily, yet deep enough to crack open a layer of awareness in a single moment.
When to use
For daily draws, short-term questions, or whenever you're stuck and want clarity without too much noise. Also perfect as the closing of a journaling session.
Ritual
Shuffle the deck while whispering your question three times out loud. Cut the deck with your non-dominant hand. Lay the top three cards from left to right, and only turn them all over once they are placed.
Meaning per position
- 1
Past, the root
What brought you here? This card shows the influence, pattern, or decision that lies beneath your current question. Not to judge, but to acknowledge.
Example card · The Hermit, points to a period of withdrawal that shaped your current clarity
- 2
Present, the crossroads
Where do you stand today, in this moment? This card shows the energy, challenge, or opportunity most present right now. This is where your work lies.
Example card · The Magician, all the tools are ready; it's up to you to use them
- 3
Future, the invitation
Which direction opens up if you handle the present consciously? Not a prediction, but the most likely movement from this path.
Example card · The Star, hope, clarity and gentle renewal are waiting for you
How do you read this spread?
First read each card on its own, then in pairs (1+2 and 2+3), and finally as one story from left to right. Ask yourself: which thread runs through all three?
